Motor Truck Cargo Insurance FAQs

Risk managers are beginning to require truckers to insure their cargo. If you are responsible for damage to or loss of the cargo that you transport on behalf of a client, motor truck cargo insurance could save you from a large loss.

You must select a limit for your coverage which determines the maximum amount your insurance company will pay for damaged cargo. You will also need to choose a deductible which is the amount you agree to pay out of pocket when you have a claim. Higher deductibles are an easy way to lower the price of your insurance.

Each carrier can have different exceptions, contact us to discuss the typical cargo you transport to ensure it is covered. The following cargo types are just some that are excluded from coverage:

  • Art, jewelry, money, or paper
    Contraband, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, alcohol
    Live animals
Property while in custody of any other carrier
Property or goods owned by the insured
Property not under Bill of Lading
    Storage greater than 72 hours
