Personal Physical Damage Coverage

Auto accidents can be costly, physical damage coverage protects you and your vehicle in the case of an accident. There are two types of physical coverage – Comprehensive coverage and Collision coverage.
Personal Physical Damage Coverage
  • Comprehensive Coverage
Can help pay the costs of damage to your car from events out of your control and non-collision related claims. It is added to other coverage you may have, like Liability Insurance.
  • Collision Coverage
Can help pay to repair or replace damages to your vehicle if you collide with another vehicle or object. It is added to other coverage you may have, like Liability Insurance

Be aware, you must first have comprehensive coverage for your car before you can buy collision coverage. Both are optional coverages; however, many lenders require it if you’re leasing or financing your car.

It's easy to mix up collision and comprehensive insurance because they both protect your car. The difference is that each coverage helps pay for damages caused by different events:

Comprehensive Insurance Covers

Pays for damages caused by:
  • Natural disasters, like hurricanes or tornados
  • Vandalism, Theft, Fire, Glass damage
  • Falling objects
  • A civil disturbance, like a riot
  • Hitting an animal, like if you hit a deer

Collision Insurance Covers

Pays for damages caused by:
  • A collision with another vehicle or an object
  • Only your car, like a rollover accident
  • Someone crashing into your car
  • An accident in a car you’ve rented

Example

Your car skids on a highway during a rainstorm and runs into a cement barrier, causing $4,000 in damage to your vehicle. If your deductible is $500, collision coverage will pay up to $3,500.
